October, 2020
It was a bittersweet moment to start the Academic Year 2020/2021 in Vienna. The new campus was developed at full speed and it turned out to be a most high-tech educational space serving the new demands of online teaching, streaming and recording.
I am glad to say that more than half of our MA cohorts and almost all PhD students arrived in Vienna to take advantage of campus-based teaching, while the rest of our students do their very best to follow classes remotely. This hybrid teaching imposes huge demands on our faculty too who have been adjusting to these challenges extremely well and hopefully we will be able to share snippets of our online classes with you soon.
Some more good news: As the result of the rigorous selection process conducted by the faculty and students, new faculty members joined the Department: Assistant Professors Mariyana Angelova and Anca Gheaus, and Matthijs Bogaards as Associate Professor. Two Visiting Professors will teach at the Department this term: Gina Donoso and Julian Casanova.
We keep up with the tradition of department seminar every Wednesday at 13.30 CET, which is offered online this term. We launched the series with MA alumn Alexander Bor (Aarhus University) on "Fact-checking videos reduce belief in but not the sharing of fake news on Twitter". Our next speaker is Gabor Simonovits (CEU) on “Can civil rights organizations deter discrimination?” You can register here for the live-stream link.
I wish you all the best during this hard time.
Take care!
Zoltan Miklosi
Head of Department
