Last week, faculty, alumni, and students from the Department of Political Science at Central European University (CEU) participated in the 11th Annual Conference of the Austrian Society for Political Science (OGPW), held at Unipark Nonntal, University of Salzburg. This year’s conference, titled “The Liberal World at the Crossroads,” provided a platform for scholarly discussion across all areas of political science, including Austrian politics, comparative politics, European Union politics, gender and politics, international relations, political methodology, and political theory.

CEU Contributions

CEU representatives participated in multiple panels, contributing to discussions on domestic politics, climate policy, populism, and international trade:

  • Professor Anil Duman (Head of Department) co-authored a paper on occupational risks and climate policy preferences in Europe, presented in Panel on Challenges to the European Green New Deal.
  • Alperen Ahmet Koçsoy (2nd-year MA student) presented in Panel on Domestic Politics and International Engagement with his study of the transnational campaign against the Ada Yumurtalık coal-fired power plant project in Adana.
  • Krisztina Szabó (visiting professor and CEU alumna) contributed to Panel 5.2 on Populism and Democracy, examining when voters punish corrupt candidates in Hungary.
  • Mehmet Yavuz (CEU alumnus) co-chaired on Trade and Power in World Politics, which explored the security implications of trade agreements.

The conference facilitated dialogue between junior and senior political scientists from Austria and beyond, providing opportunities for feedback, collaboration, and dissemination of ongoing research. CEU’s participation underscores the department’s engagement in current debates across multiple subfields of political science and its continued presence in international scholarly networks.
