CEU Mourns Passing of Renowned Hungarian Sociologist Elemer Hankiss

Sociologist, literary historian and former president of the Hungarian Public Television (MTV), Elemer Hankiss passed away on January 10 following a brief illness at the age of 86. He spent ten months in detention after the 1956 uprising on charges of treason and anti-state conspiracy, but was ultimately acquitted due to lack of evidence. In the 1960s Hankiss focused on literary theory, sociology and since the 1970s and 1980s on political sociology. He was president of MTV between 1990 and 1993. He was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at CEU. In academic year 1994-95 he taught a course entitled "The Idea of Freedom," while during the winter term of academic year 1995-96 he lectured on "The Human Condition."
