
The Department of Political Science at Central European University mourns the passing of Professor Anton Pelinka, who died on October 3, 2025, at the age of 84. A distinguished scholar of comparative politics, democracy, and Austrian political life, Professor Pelinka served for many years as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at CEU.
Prior to his time at CEU, Professor Pelinka held the position of Professor of Political Science at the University of Innsbruck, where he founded and directed the Institute of Political Science, building it into one of Austria's premier centers for political research and teaching. Throughout his long career, he brought together rigorous scholarship and a profound commitment to civic engagement. His research on democracy, nationalism, right-wing extremism, and European integration established him as one of Austria's most influential public intellectuals.
With Professor Pelinka's passing, we have lost a fearless champion of democratic values and the European ideal. His scholarly legacy and contributions to public life will continue to resonate with future generations of scholars and citizens.
