Professor Matthijs Bogaards has contributed a new book chapter:
“Consociationalism and the Accommodation of Ethno-National Conflict in a United Ireland”
(Consociational Power-Sharing in Northern Ireland, Routledge, 1st Edition, 2025)
The chapter examines Northern Ireland’s consociational democracy since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and explores its future amid discussions of a potential referendum on the region’s status. Bogaards argues that continued consociational power-sharing—whether within a united Ireland or the United Kingdom—is crucial to addressing the pluri-national character of Northern Ireland’s ethno-national conflict.
