Democracy Talk #8: What to do against the international far-right?

Democracy Talk

The Political Science Department is pleased to co-organize an upcoming Democracy Talk (September 24) with Professor Kenneth Roberts from Cornell University, a leading expert on democracy, populism, and political crises in Latin America and beyond.

In recent years, far-right political and societal actors have increasingly coordinated across borders, sharing strategies and rhetoric to challenge democratic institutions. Many leaders have adopted a common authoritarian “playbook” and, alarmingly, have begun intervening directly in the political affairs of allied countries—most recently exemplified by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s punitive tariffs on Brazil to support former President Jair Bolsonaro.

During this Democracy Talk, Professor Roberts will discuss these developments and explore strategies to counter the global spread of authoritarian tactics.
