Democracy Talk #6: Why leaders undermine their democracies: What European democracies can learn from the USA under Trump
Susan Stokes on what European democracies can learn from the USA under Trump
Thursday, 12 June 6 PM
FES Regional Office Vienna
Reichsratsstraße 13/12 (4th floor)
1010 Vienna
Join us in Vienna for a Democracy Talk with Professor Susan Stokes as she presents insights from her forthcoming book, The Backsliders: Why Leaders Undermine Their Own Democracies (Princeton University Press).
Stokes explores how growing inequality has pushed disillusioned voters toward both right-wing ethnonationalism and left-wing populism – and how elected leaders use this to erode democracy from within. We’ll also reflect on lessons European democracies can draw from the U.S. under Trump.
Professor Stokes, a leading political scientist from the University of Chicago, will be joined by moderator Eva Konzett, editor and reporter at Falter.
This event is co-organized by CEU’s Department of Political Science.
