We are pleased to announce that Professor Anil Duman has published a new article in Political Studies, a leading international journal. The study, titled “Informal Workers as Outsiders: Political Participation and Voice Across MENA Countries,” examines how informal employment shapes political behavior in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The research highlights how informal workers, often excluded from social protections and political systems, are less likely to engage in political mobilization—including petitioning, protesting, and other forms of activism. Despite varying democratic contexts, the study finds that informality consistently hinders political participation, though social assistance programs can play a role in mitigating these effects.

This publication contributes to ongoing discussions on labor markets, social policy, and democratization in the Global South. The full article is available in open access: Read it here.

Congratulations to Professor Duman on this important contribution!
