Central European University (CEU), and its Political Science Department in particular, excel in both teaching and research while offering a truly international educational environment. During my time at CEU, most of my courses were taught by deeply knowledgeable professors who are well-recognized in their respective fields. The small class sizes and research-oriented assessments ensured a very intense yet highly rewarding learning experience.

A Unique and Practical Curriculum

Two components made the CEU Political Science MA curriculum stand out to me compared to most similar programs in Europe:

  1. Substantive, Hands-On Training in Quantitative Methods:
The program provided thorough and practical training in quantitative methods, further complemented by the option to take courses from other CEU departments. This allowed me to acquire hard skills that are especially useful for academic research and highly sought after in both the private and public sectors.
  2. Research-Oriented Assessments:
Most courses focused on research projects and written assignments instead of relying solely on exams. This approach culminated in a final research thesis, making the program especially valuable for anyone considering applying to top PhD programs.

Opportunities Beyond the Core Curriculum

One of the program’s great advantages was the extensive selection of cross-listed courses and free electives. This enabled me to complement my core political science training with courses in data science, public policy, and economics from other departments.

Moreover, CEU is deeply embedded in international academic networks, offering a stimulating intellectual environment through weekly conferences and seminars. These events regularly featured renowned academics and policymakers, further enhancing the learning experience.

Skills That Translated Directly Into My Career

In my current role as a PhD researcher at Bocconi University and during my previous position as a research assistant at the European Central Bank, I have been using the knowledge and skills acquired during my MA on a daily basis. These include:

  • Using statistical software for data analysis.
  • Writing literature reviews.
  • Designing empirical research projects.

The practical and research-focused approach of CEU’s curriculum has been instrumental in my professional and academic success.

A Welcoming and Supportive Atmosphere

The atmosphere within the department and the university as a whole can only be described as very friendly. During my studies, I met many inspiring individuals and formed lasting connections with both professors and fellow students, relationships I still cherish today.

Additionally, studying at CEU allowed me to live in Vienna, a beautiful and very international city with countless entertainment and cultural opportunities.

For anyone considering pursuing advanced studies in political science, CEU’s MA program offers a uniquely rewarding experience, blending academic rigor with an enriching international environment.
