Arete: Undergraduate Essay Competition Winners

The Department of Political Science is pleased to announce the winners of the Undergraduate Essay Competition. Participation was open to all BA graduates and BA students in the last year of their studies worldwide. Students could choose one of the three topics:

1. How can democracy be deepened? Which democratic innovations show most promise? 

2. Are future generations` interests represented in electoral democracies? 

3. Did diversity (in terms of gender, ethnicity, religion, etc.) in governments increase? If so, how does this impact the global political economy? 

Essays were reviewed and scored by the departmental committee and the following students were awarded:

1. First place prize: Răzvan-Ionuț Foncea (Sciences Po, Paris) Strategies of Hope: Lessons in Democratic Resilience, from Maia Sandu to Marinika Tepić

2. Second place prize : Johanna Önnemaria Öövel (Central European University) The Empty Promises of Electoral Democracies
