Article of professor Julian Casanova on shortcomings of Spanish universities - El Pais

The article of Julian Casanova discusses the shortcomings of Spanish universities. In his view universities of a certain country faithfully reflect the country’s society. The problem with Spanish universities according to professor Casanova is that they are not seeking competitive and talented candidates, instead they offer a safe salary for a lifetime to their faculty members, and do not select them by merit. He argues that even when there was money and contracts in abundance, it was unusual to hire outsiders or select on grounds of merit, and this has clear negative effects on their quality of training and research.
