Call for the expression of interest: Populism among chief executives in CEE, Baltic States and former Soviet Republics

Dr. Kirk Hawkins, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University, Utah, USA is coming to CEU, Political Science on April 02 – 04, 2013 to undertake a project on populism among chief executives in CEE, Baltic States and former Soviet Republics.  Prof. Hawkins is an expert on populism in Latin America, and has recently published a book, Venezuela’s Chavismo and Populism in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge University Press, 2010). His research explores the impact of populism on democracy and the origins of populism among ordinary citizens.

We are looking for native speakers to participate in this research project, at least two people for each of the following languages: Armenian, Kyrgyz, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Albanian, Croatian, Czech, Georgian, Hungarian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Serbian, Turkish, Moldovan, Turkmen, Tajik, Uzbek, Azerbaijani, and Kazakh. 

Selected participants will collect a small sample of political speeches, read them in their native language and code the speeches in English using a simple template used by the research project. Researchers will be trained for coding populism in a 3 – day training workshop April 02 - 04, 13:30-15:00 and will participate in project meetings throughout April with the principle researcher. Individual researchers are expected to complete their research tasks individually, and will do the actual coding off-site. All research tasks (including the training) should take lass then 10 hours to complete. Researchers will receive a grant of approx. €120 to support their individual research. All research reports and coding results must be completed by Friday, April 26.

This call is open to all CEU students; however preference is given to students in the Political Science Department. To express your interest send a short email to the department at polsci@ceu.hu.
