In this seminar, Paul DeBell will be presenting his ongoing work on anger and disgust in politics. Paul is a Doctoral Candidate at Ohio State University and his is visiting Budapest and CEU for this semester in relation to the fieldwork of his thesis. Paul will be presenting a paper, which expresses the state of the art of his dissertation. He elaborates on the role of anger and disgust in the logics of party competition in East and Central Europe. He relates this campaign strategy of soliciting anger, which over time turns to disgust towards politics and political system, to such phenomena as increased volatility and protest voting in the region, undermining some of the norms of democratic governance. In particular, his focus is on Hungary and recent developments in the Hungarian political system. In his paper and presentation, Paul will focus on how he will tap into these phenomena with experiments, interviews and survey questions.
