Course Description:

This 2-credit course offers theoretical and comparative analysis of democracies with a special attention to the new democracies of Central Europe. First, we will analyze different theoretical models of democracy (direct, participatory, representative, elitist, populist, plebiscitary, national, transnational, global, cosmopolitan). Second, the so-called different „stages” of democracy (such as minimalist, electoral, substantive, consolidated etc.) will be analyzed. Finally, current empirical problems, such as extremism, and the signs of deterioration (deconsolidation, breakdown, illiberal state, and the rise of competitive authoritarianism and hybrid regimes) will be identified. These theoretical and comparative considerations will be tested int he countries of Central and Southeastern Europe.
