José Santana Pereira is a postdoctoral research fellow at the ICS (Instituto de Ciências Sociais), Lisbon since February 2013.

His research project, entitled "The Media as a Key Factor in the Personalization of Politics in the 21st Century" addresses the media contribution to the relevance of party leaders in the vote decision-making process, and covers several Southern European democracies.

José's past research has been focused on the media effects on public opinion and, more recently, in the study of media systems in comparative perspective. His research interests also include electoral behavior and political attitudes (namely attitudes towards Europe). José published several papers and book chapters in English, Portuguese and French, in peer-reviewed academic journals such as Electoral Studies, South European Society and PoliticsPole Sud, Portuguese Journal of Social Sciences, Relações Internacionais, or in books published by Oxford University Press or Routledge. His latest article, co-authored with Elisabetta de Giorgi, addresses the context and the results of the 2015 legislative election in Portugal, and was published by South European Society and Politics. In January 2016 José published the essay Política e Entretenimento

He is Visiting Professor at the Department of Political Science of the Central European University in Winter 2017, giving courses on:
